Welcome to tea time with Mama Swoo.

Question:
What’s the best way to cull photos? Answer: You might consider using FastRawViewer. It’s fast and easy. The current version 2 license as of 2021 November is only $23.99.

What do you do when you come home from a 10-hour wedding with 10,000 photos or when I come home after shooting 54 holes of a collegiate women's golf tournament with 26,000 photos? The world is large enough for all methods of culling. Some of the methods include import into Lightroom and then cull, Adobe Bridge, Photo Mechanic, or an artificia-l intelligence-based culling software such as AfterShoot. Each method has some great capabilities and advantages.

Quick Summary:
Open FastRawViewer
Select Folder of photos
Rate 1-star with "Option-1"
SET AUTO ADVANCE
In the panels on the right side of your screen, scroll down to the XMP Metadata panel and click on the gear icon and set it to “Rating or Label is set”. Now as soon as you set a rating or label you will automatically move to the next image without needing to press an extra key.
Filter on 1-starred photos
Use "Command-A" to select A
Move/Copy to a new folder
Use Lightroom to Import

I shoot with a Canon R6. For mission critical assignments, such as a bridal portrait in a redwood grove or 15 professional business headshots in 30 minutes, I like to record both RAW and JPEG to both SD cards. When I click a shutter, I automatically get 4 copies of the same photo.

After the shoot I upload the photos from my SD card to my computer, such as the download folder. I never cull from the SD card because I don’t want to write any XMP sidecar files back to the SD card. XMP sidecar files are generated by culling software such as FastRawViewer or Photo Mechanic to keep rating information.

Open FastRawViewer.

Select Folder.

Start to quickly step thru each photo. The same RAW and JPEG photos are displayed only once so I don’t have the cull the RAW and JPEG twice.

My particular setting is that the RAW photo is displayed and not the embedded JPEG inside the RAW or the External JPEG’s.

The scrolling of the photos is super duper speedy. I have a mid-2020 Intel 13inch MacBook Pro with 16GB of memory.

When I see a photo I like I will rate it one star with key board short-cut “Option-1”

Under the panel menu, I display the sort/filter panel.

After I am done, I will select the photos with one-star by clicking the one-star row in the sort/filter panel and then click on the source folder.

I will then do a select all with keyboard shortcut “Command-A”

I can then either move or copy to a new folder.

Open Lightroom Classic.

Import the folder of selected folder by moving the folder inside Lightroom Classic catalog folder.

Then cull further if needed.

Edit the fina culled photo.

All done!

I highly recommend FastRawViewer to my friends because it’s a fast and easy way to cull photos. You might consider checking out FastRawViewer with a 60-day free trial license.

Honestly, I’m not sponsored by FastRawViewer. If you pay for the license, and you are not happy with it and decide to use another method to cull after 4 assignments. I will re-imburse you $40 for your troubles if you are a member of the KJ Education Facebook Group :-). Mama Swoo stands behind my words. :-)
