Text From the Homily
In the book of Deuteronomy, we hear the simple admission to hear o Israel these laws and statutes and carefully to observe my teaching. First to hear then to observe. In the book of James we hear James say, ‘Be doers of the word and not only hearers.” Be doers and not only hearers. Within this last year and a half one of the blessings of the last year and a half is that it’s probably become perhaps more easier than ever to hear the word of God. On every different kind of platform, the internet, social media platform there is capability to hear the word of God. Obviously that's been Heart of the Nation's mission for so long and now so many others have been joining in and many people will say that they'll watch the Mass, that they usually watch and participate in and then they'll go on two or three others and flip around and many times people have their favorite priest or bishop or pastor that they want to listen to the homily, the sermon and its interesting because one of the things that when you're hearing the word of God, we can hear it easier than ever, we also have the capability then to tune out whatever we don't want. Just say I don't like that I’m going to flip to that one, I’m going to try a different one. But the other thing in the midst of that blessing of being able to hear the word of God better than ever praise God for that for all the modern means that allow us to hear the word of God but there's a big challenge and this is the challenge that James says be hearers and not just doers because the more we hear the word of God the more we hear the word of God, this is the temptation. That sometimes we can hear the word of God and do nothing. Hear the word of God and do nothing and what's serious about that is when we hear the word of God and then do nothing it becomes a habit. It becomes a habit and so it becomes our constant mindset our constant habit to hear God's word and to do nothing. Maybe to look at entertainment like we said before, I’m just going to find someone else. To hear and do nothing about. That's the challenge for us as we hear God's word. Not just to be hearers of the word but to be doers. We hear different ways of doing God's word. To care for the widow, the orphan, those most in need to hear and then to do. And then also as St. James says to be unstained by the world. That means to take care of our inner life. To place God's word into action within our inner life and so we pray for that grace, praise God, that we can hear the word of God clear and in more ways than ever before, but then it also becomes more of that temptation to hear and do nothing. Help us Lord to hear and to put your word into practice in our lives.
